Navigating the Classroom

As part of our Matariki learning, we had Aunty Jo Busby come in to tell us all about navigating by using the stars.

Before GPS people could use the stars to help them find their way when they travelled by sea.

We learnt the 4 main compass points, raki (north), whitinga (east), tonga (south) and tomokanga (west).

We also learnt the quadrants, tokerau (north-east), marangai (south-east), whakarunga (south-east) and whakararo (north-west).

The sun has 2 wives that he goes to visit between summer and winter. They determine how long the sun is out during the day in summer and winter.

  1. Kia ora Te Maunga It is Charlize from Te Ngahere I really liked your blog post about: Navigating the Classroom because It was really really interesting and fun to read. I learnt lots of things from your blog post such as: all of the compass symbols in Moari and also the quadrants in Moari which I thought was really interesting.

Did you have lots of fun learning about this??

  2. Tena koe, Te Maunga It’s Boston from Te Ngahere. I really enjoyed reading your post because learning how to navigate using stars is a really useful skill to know. This reminds me of when I got lectured at the beach about matariki and I found out that there's a lot of interesting stories like how Tawhirimatea crushed his eyes then threw his eyeÅ› into the sky and also the 7 sisters(Stars).

Did she( Aunty Jo) tell you any stories about Matariki?
